1960s Couples

Tonight I have two unidentified couples from the 60s:

The first bride looks very Elizabeth Taylor; except distinctly more like her look from her 1950 marriage to Conrad Hilton than her 1964 marriage to Richard Burton (Liz had moved on to yellow by her fifth wedding).

The second bride has a bit of a Joan Holloway/Christina Hendricks look about her. Yes? No? Maybe I’m just having Mad Men withdrawls…

After you get past that veil, take a look at the button detail on her sleeves. Lovely.

Harry & Bess Truman – 1919

The National Archives posted the wedding photo of Harry and Bess Truman on their Facebook page earlier today in honor of their upcoming 95th anniversary (and of course, #TBT. Really now, who can do that better than NARA?). Be sure to check out the link after the jump to the Truman Presidential Library & Museum’s digitized collection of their love letters.

A Bride and Flower Girls – 1939

Today’s photo is of a bride with her flower girls dated April 11, 1939. I think the girl on the left is probably old enough to pass as a junior bridesmaid. I was one at at age 11 (those photos possibly coming someday…maybe).

Lyle & Charlotte – 1986

Lyle and Charlotte were married 28 years ago today. Here they with some members of their wedding party on June 21st, 1986!

I’m pretty excited to have my first 80s photo for the blog…rock those puff sleeves and white nylons ladies! Notice that the junior bridesmaid and groomsman both have their eyes closed in this shot.

Mr. & Mrs. John Romoe – 1934

A little bit in love with the frame that’s been penciled in around this wedding photo dated 1934.

1950s Chicagoland Wedding

This photograph of an unknown couple waving farewell outside a Chicago area Lutheran chuch is only imprinted on the back with the photographer’s information. It was taken by Henry Jankowski, owner of Jan’s Photo Service located at 4645 South Keeler Avenue, Chicago.

The plaque on the church reads The Church of the Lutheran Hour.

Mr. Jankowski passed away in 1986. A later location of his business (5712 S. Pulaski Rd, Chicago) is still a photography studio today, although operating under a different name.

1962 Reception

I love the pillbox hat with veil, the fiesta-like crepe banner and the bride and bridesmaid’s bouquets used as table decor at this April 23rd, 1962 wedding reception.

V&A Wedding Dresses Exhibition 1775-2014

An exhibition of wedding dresses ranging from 1775 to the present day is going to be on at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, England May 3rd, 2014 – March 15, 2015.

Look at this dress with gorgeous bell sleeves from the 1930s! It was designed by Norman Hartnell who was later royal dressmaker to Queen Elizabeth.

And here it is on the bride herself:

You can read all about her first marriage, divorce, remarriage and even more infamous divorce here.

Also be sure to check out the V&A’s Here Come the Brides blog (I’ll be adding it to the blogroll). Especially this article about the restoration of a 1960s headdress.

Of course the museum is hosting a range of events to go along with the exhibit and some start as soon as next week! Do you think I can get my teleportation device working that quickly? No? Well, maybe sometime before it ends in May of next year. Certainly, if you’re lucky enough to be in the area, be sure to stop in (and let me know all about it!). More information on tickets and events is available here.

Jack & June – 1947

This is the first in a series of photos from the weddings of two sisters. They look so much alike that first I thought they might be twins, but were actually born a year apart. The younger sister, June, and her husband, Jack, were married in May of 1947 in Lansing, Michigan.  She’s wearing a tailored bridal suit so common to brides of the 1940s. Obviously this was a trend necessitated by the scarcity and expense of material for wedding gowns during (and in this case just post) WWII, but I quite like to see these smart and sophisticated looking brides.
